About this book
This is the earliest known work by Conan Doyle, a diary of his 7 months as a ship's surgeon on an Arctic whaler in 1880, which he described as 'the first real outstanding adventure in my life.' The diary is published in facsimile, along with a transcription, and the arctic short stories and non-fiction pieces that came out of his experiences which marked the beginnings of his professional writing career.
In February 1880, when Arthur Conan Doyle was only twenty years old, he embarked upon 'the first real outstanding adventure in my life,' seven months as a ship's surgeon on an Arctic whaler. The voyage took the young Conan Doyle into unknown regions and plunged him into dangerous and bloody work on the ice floes of the Arctic seas.
