Hearts and Minds by Amanda Craig

The interlocking lives of five first- or second-generation immigrants in north London South African teacher Ian, American journalist Katie, Jewish lawyer Polly, Zimbabwean taxi driver Job and trafficked Ukrainian teen Anna form the basis of Craig's sixth novel, which mixes murder mystery and romance with a detailed analysis of how we live in Britain today. London comes across as a jumble of distinct tribes who are segregated along lines of race, sex, class and language. As characters are forced to forge bonds across these boundaries, due to vice, desperation, loneliness, and a media party at which almost all of the stories intersect, Craig's message is clear: we all have more of a responsibility to each other than we'd like to admit.
